How
to I get there from here?
GPS systems seem to work fine if you navigate that way: be prepared for many small country roads at the end of the journey. If you use a service like MapQuest or GoogleMaps, be sure that you specify Rose Drive in the ZIP code 21158 and not Rose Street or any other name in which the word “rose” appears. We are quite a way north of Westminster, our postal address, in a rural area. Here are directions from a few nearby cities and towns:
(NB: These directions are good only if you are actually in or near the District. If you are further west, say in N Virginia, see below. If you are in the NW part of the Washington area or near the Beltway, see next paragraph.)
Leave
Washington on Connecticut Ave. or Georgia Ave. going N. Eventually you will
come to Maryland Highway 97. (It is also an exit off the Washington Beltway,
but be sure that you take Maryland state highway 97, not Interstate 97).
Go north on MD 97 all the way to Westminster, MD. Go through Westminster until
you see the exit for 97 North, towards Gettysburg and Union Mills. Take this.
After Union Mills, turn right on Old Hanover Road. Very soon afterwards, turn
right again on Deep Run Road. Then left on Geeting Road. Then right on Bankard
Road. After one mile look for Rose Drive on the left; there is a gate at the
bottom of a hill. Drive through the gate and we are at the top. Driving time: 2
hours from downtown Washington.
Make your way
to I-270 and proceed North. Take the exit to Damascus, MD 27 North. This
highway goes through Damascus MD and all the way to Westminster. When you reach
Westminster, leave MD 27 and take MD 97 N/140 W. Take the exit for 97 North, towards Gettysburg
and Union Mills. After Union Mills, turn right on Old Hanover Road. Very soon
afterwards, turn right again on Deep Run Road. Then left on Geeting Road. Then
right on Bankard Road. After one mile look for Rose Drive on the left; there is
a gate at the bottom of a hill. Drive through the gate and we are at the top.
Driving time: about 2 hours from the junction of I-270 and the Beltway.
Take the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) to the Northwest Expressway Exit (I-795). Take I-795 all the way to where it ends. Here you have a choice of joining Maryland 140W or Maryland 30N. Take Maryland 140W and proceed to Westminster. When you reach Westminster, 140W joins MD 97N. Stay on this highway till you see the exit for 97 North, towards Gettysburg and Union Mills. Take this. After Union Mills, turn right on Old Hanover Road. Very soon afterwards, turn right again on Deep Run Road. Then left on Geeting Road. Then right on Bankard Road. After one mile look for Rose Drive on the left; there is a gate at the bottom of a hill. Drive through the gate and we are at the top. Driving time: 1 hour from downtown Baltimore.
NB: If you are traveling from BWI airport, the directions are the same. Make sure that you get on I-695 heading North (towards Towson), and then proceed as directed above. Driving time: 1 hour from BWI airport.
From Frederick, MD
In Frederick, get on US 15 going North. Take the exit for MD 26 E. (Alternatively, if you are in downtown Frederick, proceed N on Market Street and you will eventually come to MD 26, where you turn right.) After a few miles on 26, Take MD 31 N. This highway ends in Westminster at MD 140. Take MD 140 E and stay to the right; you will then take the first exit to MD 97 North. You come to a stop sign and then have to turn left. Continue north on MD 97. After Union Mills, turn right on Old Hanover Road. Very soon afterwards, turn right again on Deep Run Road. Then left on Geeting Road. Then right on Bankard Road. After one mile look for Rose Drive on the left; there is a gate at the bottom of a hill. Drive through the gate and we are at the top. Driving time: 45 minutes from Frederick.
From Gettysburg, PA
Leave Gettysburg on PA highway 97. You will go through Littlestown, PA, and soon afterwards cross the state line into Maryland. Now you’re on Maryland highway 97. Watch for left-hand turns, which are well signposted in advance. Turn left on Silver Run Valley Road. This road ends at Old Hanover Road. Turn right on Old Hanover Road. Then turn left on Leppo Road, at the bottom of a hill. Leppo Road ends at Geeting Road; turn right. After most of a mile, Turn left on Bankard Road. After one mile look for Rose Drive on the left; there is a gate at the bottom of a hill. Drive through the gate and we are at the top. Driving time: 35 minutes from downtown Gettysburg.
From Hanover, PA
Leave Hanover on PA highway 94, also called Baltimore Street. As you approach the outskirts of town you will see a Shell Station, and a little further on, a garden center. At the top of the next hill, turn right on Tollgate Road. This road is not signposted in advance. Follow Tollgate Road till you come to a stop sign. Go straight through to the next stop sign. At this second stop sign you are just before a bridge. Cross the bridge, turn left and take the road that goes up the hill. Follow this road for most of a mile; when you see a fork to the right, take it; this is Bankard Road. At the end of Bankard Road, stop and turn left. Then turn right again immediately on the continuation of Bankard Road. After one mile look for Rose Drive on the right; there is a gate at the bottom of a hill. Drive through the gate and we are at the top. Driving time: 15 minutes from downtown Hanover.
From Northern Virginia
(Use these directions if you are considerably west of the Beltway. If you are not, use the directions for Washington, DC, above.) Proceed North on US 15 through Leesburg, VA and cross the border into Maryland at Point-of-Rocks. Continue north on US 15 till Frederick, MD. In Frederick, take MD 26 E. After a few miles on 26, Take MD 31 N. This highway ends in Westminster at MD 140. Take MD 140 E and stay to the right; you will then take the first exit to MD 97 North. Continue on 97 north till after Union Mills, then turn right on Old Hanover Road. Very soon afterwards, turn right again on Deep Run Road. Then left on Geeting Road. Then right on Bankard Road. After one mile look for Rose Drive on the left; there is a gate at the bottom of a hill. Drive through the gate and we are at the top. Driving time: 1.5 hours from Leesburg, VA.
From York, PA
Leave York heading west on US 30. You will come to the junction of PA 116 a couple of miles out of town; turn left here. Stay on 116 through Spring Grove (beware: smelly paper mill!). Eventually you will come to a stoplight, with Wilson Ave. to the right, Grandview Rd. to the left; turn left onto Grandview Rd. Continue on Grandview to the second set of traffic lights and turn left. This is PA 94, and you are now in Hanover; follow Hanover directions above.
